The JFT-Basic (Japan Foundation Test for Basic Japanese) is the fastest language route to the SSW visa. Here's exactly how to take it from India.
Where you can take it. In India, JFT-Basic is delivered by Prometric at three centres: Bengaluru, Gurgaon (Delhi NCR), and Guwahati. It's a computer-based test (CBT), held during test windows several times a year.
The fee. Around ₹3,540, paid online to Prometric when you book.
The format. One 60-minute test of about 50 questions across four areas:
- Script & Vocabulary
- Conversation & Expression
- Listening Comprehension
- Reading Comprehension
It's scored out of 250 points; you need about 200 (A2 level) to pass. There's no separate speaking section — it measures the practical Japanese you need for daily life and work.
How to register:
- Go to the Prometric JFT-Basic page for India and create an account.
- Choose your centre and date, and pay the fee online.
- Prepare (see below), then take the CBT at your centre.
- Your official result is issued in about 5 working days — fast enough for visa timelines.
How to prepare for free:
- Master hiragana and katakana first — hiragana guide · katakana guide.
- Build core vocabulary and grammar with Komichi's free N5 and N4 study decks.
- Use the Japan Foundation's free Irodori materials, which are written specifically for this test.
- Practise timed questions so the CBT format feels familiar on the day.
