To get the SSW visa you need to prove basic Japanese, and there are two accepted ways: the JFT-Basic test or the JLPT at N4 or above. Immigration treats a pass from either one equally for the visa — so the real question is which suits you. They sit at roughly the same level (JFT-Basic ≈ JLPT N4).
How they differ:
- Frequency. JFT-Basic runs about six times a year via computer-based testing (CBT). JLPT runs only twice a year (July and December) on paper. If you're in a hurry, JFT-Basic gives you far more chances.
- Speed of results. JFT-Basic results come in roughly 5 working days — ideal for urgent visa processing. JLPT results take about two months.
- Structure. JFT-Basic has one level and tests practical, everyday communication (scored on the A1–A2 CEFR scale; you need A2 to pass). JLPT has five levels (N1–N5) and is a more academic, structured exam.
- Long-term recognition. If you may later want university, vocational school, or a wider range of jobs in Japan, the JLPT is more broadly recognised as the standard benchmark.
- Cost & materials. Fees are broadly similar; JFT-Basic has excellent free official study materials (the Irodori series).
Simple rule of thumb:
- Choose JFT-Basic if your goal is to get to Japan on SSW as fast as possible — more test dates, quicker results, practical focus.
- Choose JLPT N4 if you want a recognised qualification you can build on (N3, N2…) for long-term career and study goals.
Either way, the study is the same foundation. Practise free with Komichi's N5 and N4 decks, then book your test — see JFT-Basic exam in India or read how to pass JLPT N5 to understand the JLPT ladder.
