Which Jobs Are in Demand in Japan for Indian Workers (2026)

Japan's labour shortage isn't spread evenly — a handful of sectors are desperate for workers, and those are exactly where your odds are best. Here's where the demand is in 2026.

The most in-demand SSW fields

  • Nursing & care work — the biggest opportunity by far. Japan's ageing population means an estimated shortage of around 570,000 care workers by FY2040 (MHLW 9th LTC Plan). Steady, long-term demand. See our caregiver jobs guide.
  • Food & beverage manufacturing — processing and packaging roles remain high-demand and actively recruiting.
  • Construction — ongoing infrastructure and rebuilding needs.
  • Agriculture — seasonal and year-round farm work across rural Japan.
  • Building cleaning & facilities — reliable, accessible entry-level demand.
  • Manufacturing — industrial product manufacturing across many regions.
  • Automobile transportation — added in the 2024 expansion; Japan is targeting roughly 25,000 drivers over 5 years. Note: you'll need a valid Japanese driver's licence.
  • Railway, forestry, wood products — also added in 2024.

⚠️ Food service (restaurants/hotels) update: New SSW food-service applications have been suspended since 13 April 2026 — the sector hit its 5-year cap of ~50,000 ahead of schedule. Existing food-service SSW workers are unaffected, and the field may reopen in future, but new applicants from India should focus on other sectors for now. Food & beverage manufacturing (processing, not restaurants) remains open.

Why India, why now

As of end-June 2025, a record 336,196 foreign nationals worked in Japan under SSW — up +18.2% in just six months. By early 2026, estimates put the total around ~370,000 and climbing. Yet Indians remain a very small share: the largest source countries are Vietnam (~44%), Indonesia (~21%), Myanmar and the Philippines (~10% each). India isn't even in the top ten yet.

That's the opportunity. With the India–Japan Action Plan (signed at the August 2025 Annual Summit) targeting roughly 500,000+ people in exchange between the two countries over five years — including around 50,000 skilled Indian workers flowing to Japan — there's active, high-level support for growing India's presence. Early movers face less competition than applicants from countries already saturated in the program.

The 16 SSW fields (2026)

The 2024 expansion added four fields, bringing the total to 16: nursing care, building cleaning, food & beverage manufacturing, food service (paused), construction, shipbuilding & marine, automobile maintenance, aviation, hospitality (hotels), agriculture, fisheries, manufacturing of industrial products, automobile transportation, railway, forestry, and lumber (wood products). Japan is also considering adding logistics, linen supply, and recycling.

A realistic note on pay and life

SSW wages must, by law, match what a Japanese worker in the same role earns — these are real jobs with real protections, not informal labour. Pay varies by field and region, and the cost of living differs sharply between big cities and rural areas.
