Honjo International Scholarship offers one of the highest private stipends (¥230,000/month for short degrees) for graduate students in Japan. It's open to any international student enrolled or about to enroll in a Japanese graduate school.
Foreign students enrolled (or to enrol) at a Japanese grad school. Direct application, no university pre-selection, all nationalities, all research fields. Master's must start by age 30 and PhD by 35 (no exceptions). Interviews are in Japanese; basic conversational Japanese required. Cannot hold other scholarships except MEXT, MEXT Honors, JSPS, JST or JICA. A 2-minute research video is required.
For graduate students who need living expense support. The catch: it's stipend-only, so you'll need to cover tuition separately (combine with tuition exemption).
